With heavyweights Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova absent, this is undoubtedly one of the most unpredictable Women\u2019s Wimbledon tournaments for some time,\u00a0with\u00a0Konta as well placed to triumph as any of the remaining survivors.<\/p>\n

Home Girl at Heart<\/h2>\n

Konta was born in Sydney to Hungarian parents. She spent the best part of her childhood there and started playing tennis at the tender age of 8. Her family moved to Eastbourne in 2005 when she was 15 where they settled. Konta became a British citizen in May 2012.\u00a0Despite her international background, Jo is proud to be a Brit – and is not afraid to shout about it,\u00a0telling journalists at the Australian Open last year who tried to claim\u00a0she was\u00a0Aussie that\u00a0\u201cmy home is Great Britain \u2026 that\u2019s where my heart is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rising Star<\/h2>\n

From wildcard to Wimbledon champion hopeful, Konta has soared up the rankings. She first appeared at the All England Club five years ago ranked number 212. By the end of last year she had reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the fourth round of the US Open. She’s\u00a0now ranked\u00a0seventh in the world and\u00a0is on the verge of\u00a0winning her first Grand Slam.<\/p>\n

Early Starter<\/h2>\n

Johanna was just 8 years old when she started practising her backhand in after-school training\u00a0 on the vast expanses of Australia’s Northern Beaches\u00a0before moving on to the S\u00e1nchez-Casal Academy in Barcelona when she was fourteen.<\/p>\n

A Will of Iron<\/h2>\n

Despite her modesty – she\u00a0\u201cdoesn\u2019t underestimate any opponents\u201d and is \u201cfully aware of the challenges that they will bring my way\u201d –\u00a0Konta is one tough cookie and has bags of self-confidence to see her through matches.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve always believed in my own ability and I\u2019ve always dreamed big,\u201d she said after her victory against Halep.<\/p>\n

Although she may have fallen prey to a few anxiety-induced match meltdowns in the past, she puts her remarkable poise and focus down to her training with Spanish mental coach Juan Coto in 2014, who, she says, had a \u201cremarkable influence\u201d and helped her \u201cbeyond tennis\u201d.<\/p>\n

Konta\u00a0is so strong\u00a0that she can \u201cwear an opponent down mentally,\u201d says four-time Grand Slam winner Kim Clijsters.<\/p>\n
